Singapore Property Disputes

Buying property is serious business. More so in Singapore due to its high cost. I thought it is good to share some recent and not so recent news on disputes about various condominiums in Singapore. Do note that the content is not complete and I have provided a link to related articles. This is just a simple summary.

I leave it to you to judge who is right and who is wrong, and the severity of the problem. Do click on the link for more details. Use your favourite search engine to find out more as some of the defects listed below would have been resolved amicably. Others could be non issue to start off, but still end up in the news.

The below list excludes HDB, DBSS and EC. 

The Seaview (or The Sea View) - Condo owners sue for $32m; defendants try to shift blame



Residents of The Seaview condominium, unhappy over what they say are numerous defects in their estate, have sued four parties involved in the development for $32 million.

The Aristo - Condo buyers misled into buying $2m apartment with 'infinity pool'


The pool is not an infinity pool. It's ugly. There are horrible double-sided windows around it and it is impossible to actually clean the windows if it gets dirty because it is impossible to access between the two panels of glass.

Some units ended up a little smaller than what their buyers paid for.

Emery Point - Issues at condos over the years


The terms of the settlement are confidential. The MCST of the 18-storey block of 51 units had sued for about $600,000 in compensation for damages such as a leaking basement carpark and lift lobbies with ceilings damaged by rainwater.

Seasons Park - Issues at condos over the years (Developer wins)


A lawsuit brought by the MCST on behalf of all 390 owners for damages (amount unknown) incurred from repairing defects like water leakages through the roof failed in the Court of Appeal in 2005.

The court found that the developer was not liable.

La Dolce Vita - Leaky pipes, flooding and blackouts


The freehold condo has had two power blackouts lasting at least two hours each. Residents say the lift lobby gets flooded on rainy days, causing water ponding in the lift wells of the 41-unit development.
"The drainage pipe in my kitchen sink has been leaking and has given way more than once in less than a year," said a resident, who wished to be identified only as Mrs Chng.

The Sail@Marina Bay - Waterfront condominium sails into troubled waters


Residents of waterfront condominium The Sail@Marina Bay have prepared a war chest to embark on a legal battle against its developer over damaged fixtures.

However, three other key motions to resolve the property's issues - which ranged from falling glass panels and card access security to council members allegedly misusing their power to further their careers - failed to pass.
In March 2011, they began to experience water leak issues at the lift and escalator areas.
